Adele K. Sweetwood (2016)

Dan Ariely who is an American expert economist said that “Big data is like teenage sex: everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it”.

In the recent year, undoubtedly, Big Data is becoming the most popular issue in the Information Technology and Marketing area. Therefore, most of people start to discuss and try to use Big Data to help them solving problems even improving in marketing strategies. However, did you really realize the Big Data, didn’t you? In the following essay, let me introduce the Big Data and some interesting ideas what Big Data might be development in the future.

The Characteristics of Big Data

It is general said that Big Data is a very huge digital information. In addition, this data is so big that people can not save, transmit and analyze it by themselves or current technology devices. So Big Data is promoted scientists to invent higher efficient saving technology devices. All of the Big Data information has the following four characteristics

  1. VolumeNormally, the information collect on the data scale at least 10 TB (Tera Bytes), sometimes it might up to the PB (Peta Bytes) data scale. For example, the BaiDu search engine, over 1.5PB data is provided to users in the index page each day.
  2. VarietyNowadays, the data forms are not only numbers but also pictures, videos and geographic location …etc.
  3. VelocityThis is the most important different between Big Data analysis and traditional data analysis. ”A second theorem” which means the result of analysis should be responded with few seconds. If not, it will lose the value about velocity.
  4. ValueThe data’s value is lower traditional data, such as video, which is continuously monitoring for an hour, but only a few seconds are useful.

History of Big DataThe bombing information generation is starting

“Big Data” is mentioned by IBM in 2011 because the IBM wanted to introduce the database which they created. After that, they posted a “#IBMbigdata” hashtag on their Twitter. This is actually let Big Data become popular in the global world. However, basically, Big Data is not a new product in the recent year. Since 1960, physical scientists tried to analyze the amount of database in physical area. In the recent year, various areas, such as medical science, meteorology and marketing, start to collect the database and then analyze it.

Since hundreds of year, people has collected data and kept the useful data in order to improve our life so this is a main concept of the Big Data. In the modern age where information explodes every minute because of developing technology, every one has an easy access to all sorts of information. Experts forecast that the amount of database in 2020 will be 44 times in 2009; information generated by individual users will account for 70% of all information, and the enterprise will store 80% of total amount of information collected.

In the fall of 2012, Apple promoted a new function called “Siri” which becomes a personal voice assistant in the IPhone. Siri is one the function using Big Data, it could mention your schedule, weather report, answer questions and even call a phone. The significant interesting is that Apple will collect your habit and voice database to improve your Siri becoming more suitable for you.

The developing of Big Data

The applications of Big Data are extensive such as medical, marketing, weather…etc. The Big Data explosion has changed decision making. And I will focus on how the Big Data will change the car industry in the future.

I haven’t seen any car’s company use Big Data to track their customers yet in my country, so I just propose this idea in my blog and hope it will become in the future. Nowadays, in the modern countries, most of people need a car. Could me image that if cars are became digitizing, what it happens? Maybe, someone will say that the digitizing is just add a MBB module for the database. But I think the digitizing means that cars could connect to the internet at any time, and the digitizing could be an auto-drive, navigation. Each times, each actions you drive your car, including each vehicle maintain, each routes you drive, each video about accident, and even each your driving habits (brakes and acceleration) could become a database and be collected to your car firm.

Then how to do? We suppose that their no illegal situation, then database could be spread to the relative industries and government. They will use your database to do modeling analysis

  1. In the insurance firmIn the past, there are only few choices to confirm your risk factor; first one is people have never been in a car accident over two years, second one is people have never been in a car accident within a year, third one is people have been in an once car accident within a year, and final one is people have been in over twice car accidents within a year. However, this distinguish methods has a serious problem is that someone is a safe driver, unfortunately, he is happened car accidents lots of times because others hit him, and another one is that someone is a dangerous driver, luckily, he has never been in a car accident. By the Big Data, the insurance firm could collect driver’s habit information, including driving habits, route and the condition of car (year and brand) make appropriate products which have a discount for safe driver and charge extra fees for dangerous driver for their customers.
  2. In the vehicle maintenance plant, they could use your database, including brakes, acceleration, and tires to decide whether your car is needed to maintain instantly. Sometimes it could prevent some problems, especially in safe problem. Moreover the store could prepare the components what you need then saving your time efficiently.
  3. In the government part, they could collect each driver’s route and driving time, then they change the traffic lights time automatically. Maybe, some place could move out the traffic lights. I believe that it could solve some traffic and pollution problems. Turning to the parking space, I think it’s a serious problems in my country even in other countries. I know that there are already have an automatic parking system, but no specific parking area for automatic parking system. It could save more space by automatic system. In the final part, government could publish the index about each cars such as, safety, put pollution and tax …etc, then encourage people to buy more saving energy and safety car.

My opinion about Big Data

  1. Big Data could really let company focus on their consumers instead of traditional focus on company. By using Big Data, company could make an individual service as well as make more money.
  2. Big Data changes decision making in various areas.
  3. The most important part is that the Big Data changes our commercial logic. It provides us a method which can find an answer directly. In the past, when people faced a problem, people tried to use their experience or copy other successful ways to solve the problem, but it was not effective in each times. However, the Big Data could provide a new method which has processed analysis. It is easier to understand.

So American says that Big Data is a resource and an oilfield. This could make people wealth. The Big Data is a renewable resource, the more you use then the more money you get.
